Editing

I'm thrilled that you have expressed yourself through writing. As your editor, my aim is always to support your voice.

I currently edit fiction and narrative nonfiction such as memoirs. I have over 20 years experience in writing and publishing fiction, as well as nearly 20 years as a curriculum editor and instructional designer. I bring my combined expertise to each project. I  reference the editing industry standard, the Chicago Manual of Style.

I accept manuscripts in Word, in digital format. I edit electronically with the Track Changes feature active so you can accept or reject each suggested change. I comment directly into the digital file. If you've requested developmental or line editing, I will give my overall impressions of your work in a companion document. I believe in constructive feedback, rather than criticism. That means I will strive to explain clearly what isn't working, why I think it doesn't work, and how I think it could be improved. If I love something, I will express that just as clearly!

Each project includes one post-edit consultation via email. This would be the time to compile questions for me, and to have me review portions of your manuscript that you rewrote in response to my suggestions.

To get in touch, email me at naima.haviland@gmail.com with the following information: your name, working title, genre, word count, desired timeline, and what type of editing you are looking for. I will respond promptly.

Developmental Editing

A developmental edit is your manuscript's first professional assessment. This edit includes:

  • Advice on improvements to elements such as plot, pacing, character development, and setting

You will receive:

  • Your manuscript with Track Changes active showing my edits and comments

  • A companion document with my overall impressions of your work (constructive, respectful, and kind)

  • A post-edit consultation by email in which I answer questions and, if you request, review and comment on revisions made in response to the edit

Before you commit to hiring me, you will receive a free sample edit of a portion of your manuscript.

Fee - .09/word.

Examples:

7,000 words = $63

70,000 words =$630

Line Editing

Line editing is the edit done after developmental editing. It's literally a focus on each line of your manuscript.

During a line edit, I will:

  • Assess tone, word choice, and sentence structure

  • Note inconsistencies in detail such as a character's physical attributes

  • Fact check historical or nonfictional details

  • Suggest improvements to scenes that are confusing or dull

  • Eliminate overused words or suggest alternative words

  • Correct typing, grammatical, and spelling errors (proofread)

You will receive:

  • Your manuscript with Track Changes active showing my edits and comments

  • A companion document with my overall impressions of your work (constructive, respectful, and kind)

  • A post-edit consultation by email in which I answer questions and, if you request, review and comment on revisions made in response to the edit

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final edit before you self-publish or send your manuscript to a publisher. This is essential, because you don't want your readers to be distracted by simple, avoidable mistakes. A proofreader, corrects typographical, grammatical, and spelling errors.

You will receive:

  • Your manuscript with Track Changes active showing my edits and comments

  • A post-edit consultation by email in which I answer questions and, if you request, review and comment on revisions made in response to the edit
